Say no to Epoxy Paints and Yes to an easier long last solution.

Epoxy painted floors are popular for covering concrete in the garage, warehouse flooring, military floors and other applications.  If you have a new concrete floor, then epoxy may work for you.  However if your concrete has stains or is in disrepair then putting down epoxy is very labor intensive, and expensive.  We offer some easy long term solutions for covering old cracked painted floors.

Removing old epoxy

Repairing concrete that is stained or has old paint requires several days and steps of cleaning and prepping the concrete.  To remove old paint or stains, you will acid wash the floor to loosen the epoxy and scrape away the old paint.  If stains have penetrated the concretes top layer, you will need to grind down a layer of concrete to remove the stain.  Acid wash is a  harsh chemical, and protective gear is highly recommended.  Then any cracks will need to be filled and leveled.

New concrete can have epoxy paint issues as well.  If you have concrete that has high ground moisture, then once the paint is installed, the ground moisture can rise up between the concrete and paint causing the paint to lift and peel.  High moisture concrete has a tendency to peel within 6 months to a year.  If you have a high moisture it is recommended you hire a professional to install.

4 Steps to an Organized Garage

Most of us crave organization, but some of us don’t even know where to start. It’s a daunting task and sometimes it’s easier to close the garage, shut off the lights, and avoid looking at it. However, we all want to be able to leave our garage door open and not be afraid of someone seeing the mess. It also makes your life so much easier; With an organized garage, you can know where all your tools are! You can do that project you’ve been neglecting/have always wanted to do! You can even park your car in your garage!

That basketball that your son popped two months ago should be thrown out. It’s not going to be fixed and honestly, its taking up space. Go through everything. Sell things on craigslist that you know you’ll never use again. Throw out or recycle those items that can’t be sold. Get rid of what you don’t want. Drop off items at goodwill or salvation army.

At the same time, organize the things you do have (and want to keep) by type. Put all your tools together, put all the sports balls together, painting supplies, Christmas lights, workout equipment you haven’t used since 2003, you get the idea. Get an understanding of what you have.

Getting storage tubs is a great way to keep your things organized and you can also know where your things are.

Clean your garage and get ready for the next phase. Get rid of those spider webs and dirt.

How to keep pests out of your garage

Creating a tight seal on your garage door and closing off exposed cracks or holes will help keep out dirt, pest, critters, and rodents out of the garage. We want the critters to stay outside, so closing off any gaps will help to keep them out.  Additionally it will help keep any rain and water out of your garage too.

Get the clutter off the floor, items that bugs, spiders, snakes, or rodents might want to make their home.  Getting stuff off the ground with overhead storage racks, or garage cabinets.  If you keep storage containers in your garage be sure the lids are tightly sealed.

Rodents can get into the smallest of holes, so using a RodentBlock seal on your garage door will put a seal on your door that they can’t chew though.  Xcluder’s patented fill fabric create a tough barrier that is virtually impenetrable to rodents, resulting in reduced maintenance cost and improved compliance. Compatible with our bottom seal retainers, and fits many standard door retainers.

We offer the Xcluder material by the foot, so that it can be added to other style garage door bottom seal materials. Or get it in the 3″ or 4″ Rubber Seal already attached.

If you have a gap on your garage door that is caused by uneven concrete, a garage door bottom seal may not be enough.  You may need to add a garage door threshold to get a good tight seal.  A garage door threshold is adhered to the concrete where the garage door comes down and meets the ground.  The threshold has a peak that helps fill in the gaps that a garage door bottom seal may not be able to because of uneven concrete or an unusual large gap.

We carry three brands of garage door threshold kits that include the adhesive, the threshold and instructions.

Close off side and top gaps around your garage door.  We offer several solutions to closing the gaps.  The least expensive and easiest solution is our vinyl top and side seal, it attaches to the garage door frame and rest against the edge of the garage door, closing the gaps.  Click here for more information on our side and top garage door seal.  Another solution for closing off side and top gaps is our weather brush seals.  The brush seals fit into an aluminum retainer, most side gaps are closed off with a straight retainer, and along the top of the garage door an angle retainer.  The brush comes in many styles and lengths, the most popular is the slim line brush seal.

Last, fill in cracks and gaps around your garage by stuffing the Xcluder Rodent Block into the holes or filling with a silicon.  Any side doors that lead into the garage should also be weather proofed with brush seals or bottom seals.
